Board Members Present: Jim Corbin-President, Dr. Terry Curry-Director SLIR, Katlyn Redlowsk, Tina Menzie, Angela Pacheco- GSA Rep, John Van Hoesen- Treasurer, Flo Baerren, Tina Riley, Catherine Lundy, Elaine Yakura-LIR Faculty and Gordon J. Wilson
Meeting opened at 6:20 pm by President Corbin
Job Reports:
Tina Riley reported that the LIR web site has jobs posted by recruiters for LIR Alums
John VanHoesen reported that the State of Michigan will within the next 5 to 10 years be reducing it’s workforce by 40%.
SLIR 50th Anniversary
Jim Corbin stated the main purpose of tonight’s meeting is to have the Board finalize plans for the Kruger Award to be presented at the SLIR 50th Anniversary.
Dr. Terry Curry reported that plans for the SLIR 50th to be held October 25 and 26, 2006 are well underway. An early notice of the event will be send to all grads. The 50th brochure is at the printers and a web site will be up and running shortly.
The first recruitment for the Conference started with an Alumni reception in Houston. Alums including VP/HRs and 1973 through 2005 graduates coming from Houston, Dallas and Corpus Christi. Shell hosted the event at a private club. Alums talked about how the SLIR program benefited them in their career. Networking and development opportunities were the most important.
During the event Dr. Terry Curry discussed with the alums about contributions to an endowment, which would be a stable course of funding for the school. Alums felt that scholarships and assistantships should be a top priority since that was the method they used to get thought the program.
Dr. Curry reported that Alumni Receptions will be held in San Francisco in April 10. 2006 and Chicago, June 13, 2006

Kruger Award
Jim Corbin said the Board should finalize the Kruger award to be presented at the 50th Anniversary Conference. Board decided that the criteria discussed at the last Board meeting in January would be used to decide the nominee of the award. (See January Board Minutes)
Flo Baerren introduced the motion and Kalyn Redlowsk seconded. Motion passed motion.
Gordon Wilson is to meet with John Valenti, SLIR Technician and develop an Alumni Web site space for the Kruger nominations. E-mail will be sent all grads and current students referring them to the web site. Grads and current students will read the criteria and submit a written document as to why they are placing the person for nomination. (If there are any questions, a phone number will be posted on the site.
(Note: a web mail address has been provided for convenience in place of a phone number. See web site for further details.)
This web site nomination process will occur for a three-week time period. After that all nominations will be reviewed by the Board. The Board will make the final decision as to the nominee at the May 9th meeting.
( Note: site is up and running as of April 3, 2006 and will continue to accept nominations until May 7,2006.) Nominations are closed!!
Treasures Report
John VanHoesen reported that we have $2846.50 in the alum account.
Dr. Terry Curry said it would be a nice idea if the Board made some contribution to the endowment.
The Board will decide what they will do and maybe use a system of challenges and matching gifts.
Alumni Web site
Gordon Wilson said the Alumni web site is up and running.
The site includes: By-Laws, Photos of past events and meeting minutes.
Gordon will continue to add new materials on an as needed basis. Suggestions and ideas related to Alumni activities is encouraged.( However not all suggestions or ideas may be endorsed.)
Mentoring Programs
Elaine Yakura, SLIR Faculty said that she was working with Shawn Driscoll, LIR alum, regarding mentoring requests for students.
Angela Pacheco, GSA representative said the GSA’s experience with mentoring was one-on-one mentoring seems to work best because the major problem is that students really did not know what questions to ask.
John Van Hoesen said that the DNR has a project with Davenport for non-paid credit internships. Students actually design a project. John wondered if this was something that LIR would be interested in doing with the DNR.
Annual State L/M Conference
Jim Corbin said that students are invited to attend any of the workshops for the conference free by calling him at 517/347-2463.
Conference will be held at Kellogg Center, March 30-31, 2006
