An Introduction to the Family Medical Leave Act

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is the first online course offered through the MSU's School of Labor and Industrial Relations. FMLA is one of the most challenging employment laws for employers to administer; especially now that it has been amended by the National Defense Act.

Recently, the FMLA was amended to permit a spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin to take up to 26 work weeks of leave to care for a member of the Armed Forces. This online course will provide you and the supervisors and managers in your organization with the information you need to effectively administer the family and medical leave act.

 

Instructor

RileyTina Riley is an Assistant Professor in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Michigan State University (MSU). She holds a Ph.D. in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education as well as a Master of Arts in Labor Relations and Human Resources from MSU.

She has served as director of the School's Human Resources Education and Training Center and as Associate Director for Outreach. Dr. Riley has given presentations nationwide on the topics of strategic recruiting, training and development, supervisory skills, and employment law.

She is also a CAPT-qualified administrator of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and has worked with many groups in developing value from differences within the workplace.

Employment Law Online: Terms of Employment

The Employment Law: Terms of Employment module offered through MSU's School of Labor and Industrial Relations addresses the employment law issues that arise for human resources professionals in establishing the employment contract terms, and setting the compensation and benefits for employees. Part of the hiring process includes determining what job security the employee will have. Once the decision to hire someone has been made, employers must ensure that the rate of pay and benefits offered to the selectee is not discriminatory. Once hired, employers must also ensure that employees who are entitled to review overtime pay are not classified as exempt. In providing benefits such as health insurance for employees, employers must be sure to comply with federal requirements regarding the administration of the plan, including avoiding discrimination or retaliation based on someone's assertion of a right.
