Monday

On Monday, we will examine the basic components of HR Management and how they integrate with other organizational and environmental systems.

We will review employment laws focusing on anti-discrimination legislation. You will learn the basic principles of law, how each regulation applies to your organization, and the interaction between state and federal employment laws. We will also explore ethical issues facing organizational members and will discuss HR ethical standards of conduct.

In addition, you will gain an understanding of what documentation you need to enhance your organizational decision-making and ensure legal compliance. You will learn requirements and recommendations for records collection, maintenance and use, length of time to keep serious documents, and when it is appropriate to destroy employment related records. This section includes an extensive, detailed reference manual containing relevant state and federal employment laws, and record keeping checklists


Tuesday
Tuesday begins with a review of human resources and the law. We then cover the basics of providing a safe and healthy work environment and the value of encouraging employee wellness.

We continue the day exploring the critical role of job analysis as a building block of HR systems, how to gather information for job descriptions and legal aspects involved in this process.

Finally, we cover the basics of compensation and benefits including the objectives of an effective compensation system, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, and mandated and voluntary benefits.


Wednesday

Wednesday provides information on how to attract, select and retain new employees. You will practice through a variety of recruitment and selection strategies and applications.

We also cover how to develop a new employee orientation program that facilitates employee success.


Thursday

Thursday begins with how to develop effective training and development programs for your organization. In this section, we review effective methods to develop training programs that meet organizational and employees needs.

The day continues with performance management and appraisal as essential tools for organizational and individual success. We explore how to ensure that employees are focused on accomplishing organizational goals, are behaviorally aligned with the direction of the organization and acting in line with organizational values.


Friday

On Friday, we will cover the nuts and bolts of employee relations. You will be provided with basic knowledge to evaluate whether your disciplinary procedures are respectful of employee rights and how to ensure appropriate union/management relations.

Although HR metrics will be covered throughout the week, some time will be spent on HR measures of success that speak the language of business. We will look at traditional HR metrics such as hiring costs, training costs, lawsuits, and other very visible costs, as well as more business focused measurements such as ROI, asset utilization, and value stream management of the individual.

Finally, we cover how HR professionals can and need to make a business case for well-developed HR practices.
