Recertification Requirements
CHRS's are now required to be recertified at two year intervals. They can fulfill
their recertification requirement by demonstrating that they have completed 28
credit hours of related continuing education or by passing an HRETC provided recertification examination.
This page describes the continuing education requirement.
Continuing Education
Applicants must present evidence that they have attended or completed at
least 28 credit hours of qualifying continuing education courses in the two years prior to recertification.
Qualifying Credits
HRETC will grant credit for a wide variety of programs from various sponsors.
Typically, a half-day program will be counted for four hours of credit and a full-day program for seven hours.
Conferences, meetings and workshops centered around professional development in this field will be considered
eligible for earning credit hours. HRETC will offer one-day workshops that can be applied toward the recertification credit.
Course Approval
CHRS's are not required to obtain pre-approval of courses from outside institutions they take. However,
if you wish to do so, a course can be pre-approved by HRETC upon submitting this form to the office.
Evidence of Attendance
You may submit this form and attach a copy of a letter or certificate from the sponsoring organization.
NOTE: Proof of attendance can only be submitted in conjunction with the application. i.e.
August 1st-September 30th of the year you are due for recertification. Please retain all
related information for these courses until that time.
Instruction and Writings
Other options are open to those who wish to renew their certification through continuing education.
Development or presentation of training programs will earn seven credit hours for each training hour. Proper documentation is required.
Participation in labor contract negotiations will earn seven credit hours per hour of negotiation. Proper documentation is required.
Experiential Learning: Participation in major projects such as six-sigma and change initiatives that are related to
professional development can count for credit if a written summary of said accomplishment is submitted.
The essay must include an outline of the project, the applicant's role in the project, and a statement
of what was learned and why the project was relevant. Three credit hours can be earned per essay presented.
A written summary of contemporary books or articles pertaining to the profession can be submitted for credit.
The summary should be 2-4 pages in length and should include implications for the applicant, his/her
organization and the field in general. Each summary submitted will be worth one credit hour.
A successfully completed college course pertaining to the profession from an accredited
institution will earn all 28 credit hours. The applicant must achieve a GPA of 2.5 or
higher to receive this credit. Course not taken for college credit will be evaluated
for recertification credit on an individual basis.
