LEP
Mission Statement
WHO WE ARE ...
Michigan State University's Labor Education Program (LEP), as part of the School
of Labor and Industrial Relations, brings together University faculty and Union
leadership to provide education and training for union leaders and members. Since
1956, our nationally known programs have provided the vehicle for a real world
focus on the concerns of working people. LEP works closely with the labor movement
on a local, state and national level to further guarantee that programs are designed
to fit the needs of local membership as well as International Union staff. Our
Mission The Morrill Act created land grant colleges, whose special mission is
to promote ... the practical education of the industrial classes in the several
pursuits and professions of life. It is this mission that guides us in our goal
to offer programs which bring together working people who share a common concern
for the future of their workplace, their union and their community.
WHAT WE DO ...
LEP Provides:
CLASSES
LEP offers an extensive curriculum in leadership and bargaining
skills, labor law, communications, labor economics and government. Courses are
tailored to Labor Council, CAP Council and Local Union requests and are taught
in your area. Steward Training, Collective Bargaining, Parliamentary Procedure,
Labor History and Workers' Compensation are a few examples of the wide variety
of topics covered. Special classes may also be designed to fit Labor Council
CAP Council or Local Union needs.
WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS
Targeted training and
tutorials can be designed to assist unions with emerging trends and teach new
skills. Public Sector Cost Accounting and Lean Production for Workers are examples
of in-depth programs which supply technical training to union leaders and members.
Conferences LEP sponsors regional and statewide conferences on subjects of interest
to union members. Look for the Labor Law and Employment Law Update conferences
held every other year as well as special conferences on Public Sector Privatization
and Workers Compensation. In addition, LEP and the University of Illinois Institute
of Labor and Industrial Relations jointly sponsor a yearly National Conference
for Labor Representatives in the Health Care Industry. Visit our National Conference
