Professor Ellen Ernst Kossek is one of ten professors recently named by President Lou Anna K. Simon and approved by the MSU Board of Trustees as a University Distinguished Professor in recognition of her achievements in the classroom, laboratory and community. This is among the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the university. A ceremony will be held at the Wharton Center in October and a video on Dr. Kossek's scholarly contributions will be prepared for the MSU Web site. Additionally, Dr. Kossek and Portland State University’s Dr. Leslie Hammer describe their innovative supervisor training program designed to improve worker health in an article in the August 2009 edition of the Journal of Management.

Excerpt: "Labor law changes in the Employee Free Choice Act appear close to becoming reality. News reports that the "card check" provision has been dropped at the insistence of some Democratic senators have portrayed that as a "loss" by unions - but the parts of the act that are likely to survive largely intact will go a long way to bringing balance and fairness to the National Labor Relations Act, the law governing union organizing and collective bargaining in the United States."

Dr. Peter Berg and Dr. Mary Hamman traveled to Nuremberg, Germany in July to conduct research on gradual retirement and other retirement pathways. This project is funded in part by an MSU Faculty Initiatives grant.

Dr. Kossek led the first SLIR study abroad program in France on International HRM this June at the Rouen School of Business. The students enrolled in the class visited a number of companies, including Avaya, General Electric, McDonalds, Hertz, Lubrizol and a French hospital, and worked on an international management development case with French students at the Grand Ecole. Dr. Mishra's article "How to Downsize Your Company without Downsizing Morale," published in the Spring 2009 MIT Sloan Management Review was recently profiled in the June 2009 issue of HR Magazine. Additionally, he was cited in the July 2009 Conference Board report "Relieving Pressure to Eliminate Jobs." He discusses Rhino Foods' unique Employee Exchange Program as a strategy to avoid layoffs in the report.
