LEP Faculty

LEP faculty members offer experience and in-depth research and publishing in their areas of specialty. This means they remain current on union, business, regulatory and legal issues and problems that face you and your union. They will work with your local area Labor Council, CAP Council and Union Leadership to choose the best instructors and to design programs on issues you have identified.

Julie L. Brockman, PhD, is an instructor and consultant for the Labor Education Program (LEP) and the Program on Innovative Employment Relations Systems (PIERS). As an instructor for LEP, Julie has conducted workshops at local and national levels for union organizations and their joint partners. As a consultant for PIERS, she assists unionized organizations, both within the private and public sectors, in developing and implementing joint initiatives. Julie also coordinates the Conflict Resolution Program for MSU's Graduate School. Julie’s primary research interests focus on the workplace as a location for adult learning and development; negotiation and conflict resolution; and the process of joint union/management collaboration. Prior to her work with the School of Labor and Industrial Relations, Julie was employed by the Nestle’ Chocolate and Confections facility in Fulton, NY (’86-’95) and the TRW, Inc. Aircrafts Components Group in Euclid, Ohio (’84-’86).  Julie received graduate degrees in Organizational Communication from Ohio State University and Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University.  She completed her doctoral degree in Adult Education from Michigan State University.

Michelle Kaminski, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Labor and Industrial Relations at Michigan State University.  She has conducted workshops for union members and leaders for over ten years on a variety of topics, including labor law, collective bargaining, steward training, communication skills, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the union role in team concept workplaces, and basic economic history. She also designs programs to further develop women’s leadership in unions. Her research publications focus on teams, workplace health and safety, and women in organizations. Michelle was elected University Vice-President (2002-2004) of the United Association for Labor Education. She earned a Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan. Previously, Michelle was a bargaining unit leader with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 35, now part of CWA. She is a member of UAW Local 1981, the National Writers Union.
