Many experienced and successful Human Resources and Labor Relations leaders point to early career mentors and supporters as key to their career success. With the support of a mentor, professionals can achieve career goals and manage career and life transitions with greater ease.

The School of Labor and Industrial Relations has a broad and impressive alumni network, consisting of HR/LR business leaders in Fortune 500 companies, small to mid-sized organizations, and small business owners. In December, 2004 the SLIR Women's Alumni Network piloted an Alumni
Mentoring program designed to give graduating seniors ongoing access to successful and established SLIR Alums. This program will be expanded and available to May, 2005 graduates.

Our volunteer mentors provide career guidance, transition support and a collaborative partnership to help graduating seniors achieve success in their transition from student to HR/LR professional. The volunteer mentors have diverse experience as both generalists and specialists in all areas of Human Resources and Labor Relations, as well as OD.

The guidance, support, and expertise mentors provide new grads can be invaluable to any student wishing to get off to a strong start in a new position and organization. Mentors, in turn, have an opportunity to grow their coaching and mentoring skills, share of their experience, and connect with new entrants into the HR/LR workforce.

Participation in the mentoring program is confidential and voluntary. Mentors do not provide employment to student mentees. To find out more about the program or learn how to become involved, please email mentoring@lir.msu.edu.
